PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY:
Dr. Van Buer has worked in the computer industry since 1974 with an emphasis on artificial
intelligence applications, distributed relational databases, operating systems and hardware.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
HRL Laboratories (formerly Hughes Research Laboratories): March 1998 - present
Senior Member of the Research Staff
- Performing research and development in the areas of satellite and wireless
networking as a medium for database dissemination.
Data Integration: October 1990 - December 1997
Staff Research Scientist
-
Designed and implemented schema translation for the InterViso Federated Data Manager
which uses a combination of query transformation and interpretative techniques to provide
powerful and efficient data value transformation and selection.
-
Responsible for maintenance and enhancements to the InterViso query optimizer.
-
Responsible for development of interfaces between InterViso and most relational DBMS and
gateway products including DB2, Cross Access, EDA/SQL, Oracle, Sybase, and ODBC.
-
Designed and built a program to relationally normalize IDMS and IMS data descriptions.
-
Installation and support of Unix operating system.
SDC/Unisys: 1978 - 1990
Staff Research Scientist
-
Member of a group which implemented a semiautomatic theorem prover in Prolog and
Common Lisp.
-
Designed database caching strategies for expert systems to efficiently access external
databases.
-
Participated in the selection and modification of an Ada compiler front end to pre-process
verification assertions in Ada programs.
-
Implemented the Flexible Deductive Engine, a system for logic programming and database
augmentation with access to external relational databases. He developed the networking
software and DBMS interfaces as well as a flexible new system combining logic programming
and deductive data management.
-
Was responsible for implementing modifications and enhancements to the Deductively
Augmented Data Management (DADM) system, an early system for logic programming and
deductive data management.
-
Reimplemented the low level support routines for list processing, including garbage
collection, and for formatted I/O when CWIC (a list processing and compiler compiler system)
was rehosted into C. Used CWIC to generate a Jovial 73 compiler.
UCLA Pharmacology Department 1976 - 1978
Applications Programmer
-
Developed programs for processing and numerical analysis of experimantal data.
Iowa State University Computation Center 1974 - 1975
Systems Programmer
-
System programming on MVS/MVT for360-370.
